For millennia, humans have treated other animals as subservient and inferior—whether for survival, for tradition, or under the merciless gears of commerce. But increasingly, people are realizing that our future doesn’t have to look like our past. We are empowered like never before, by the tools and collective wisdom of the modern world, to choose a new relationship with animals. And we’re learning that this shift is not only possible, but full of benefits—for humanity, for the planet itself, and for all of its inhabitants.

Kinship follows world traveler, author, and activist, Lucas Spiegel, as he meets those who are living out values of true respect for animals. From animal sanctuaries, cutting-edge alt-protein companies, and off-grid communities, to activist organizations, innovative chefs, and farmers who have transitioned out of animal agriculture—the documentary will spotlight a wide range of change-makers around the world. With a deep sense of curiosity, empathy, and respect, the host will explore the most pressing questions about this inflection point: what could our future look like, and how do we get there; how can we achieve a just and equitable transition; how can different worldviews and traditions change us, or be changed by us; and what is there to gain by relinquishing the throne of human superiority?

Part impact documentary, part food show, and part travel memoir, Kinship is an exciting and fascinating exploration of the world’s cuisines and traditions, the world’s activists and innovators, and the world’s potential future.

At this point in history, we are finally free to renounce the role of oppressor, to leave behind the era of kill-or-be-killed, and to embrace a world of abundance, compassion, and kinship. Viewers will be left inspired and empowered to both envision and participate in this transition to a kinder world.
